Australia and Hydrostadium celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Olympics
Paddle Australia, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and Penrith City will organise a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the whitewater stadium and the Olympic Games.
The current whitewater stadium, designed, built and equipped by Hydrostadium in close collaboration with the government-owned company Pacific Power International and its engineers Ian Shephard and, above all, Peter Heeley, uses water from former gravel-pit lakes, with its water supply provided by a pumping station. Thanks to the removable Omniflots® obstacles, the whitewater stadium can adapt the course, while its U-shaped layout places the finish close to the start.
The ceremony will also provide an opportunity to present the new “Our New River Project”. A second whitewater stadium is currently under consideration. Hydrostadium is a partner of Paddle Australia on this project and fully committed to it, as is EDF Energie Renouvelable, a subsidiary of EDF primarily dedicated to solar and wind energy, whose objective is to make the site (current and future whitewater stadiums) 100% self-sufficient in electricity consumption.
“Our New River Project” is intended to complement the existing stadium’s offering.
